Incredible Journey – What to Expect
You’re in the home stretch! The third trimester of pregnancy marks the final phase of your pregnancy journey, and at Baby Tyme Ultrasound Studio, we’re here to support you as you prepare to meet your baby
From week 28 until delivery, your baby grows rapidly and your body prepares for labor. It’s an exciting time filled with anticipation and significant physical changes.
What’s happening with your baby
Your baby is making remarkable progress:
- Weeks 28-31: At this stage, your baby’s brain is developing more folds and grooves, increasing their cognitive abilities. Their senses—hearing, sight, and touch—are also becoming more refined. Your baby can respond to light and sound, and may even turn toward familiar voices. Eyelids begin to open and close, and eyelashes appear. Around week 30, your baby measures approximately 38 centimetres long and weighs nearly 1.4 kilograms.

- Weeks 32-35: As fat layers continue to build beneath the skin, your baby begins to look more like a newborn. These fat stores will help regulate body temperature after birth. The bones are still soft and flexible, but they’re growing stronger each day. You’ll also notice more pronounced movements during this period—everything from kicks and rolls to stretches and little jabs. Your baby is now likely positioned head-down, preparing for birth.

- Weeks 36-40: In the final weeks of pregnancy, your baby “drops” lower into your pelvis—a process known as lightening. This position helps prepare them for delivery. Organs such as the lungs and brain continue to mature, and your baby’s immune system is getting stronger. By the end of this trimester, most babies weigh between 2.7 to 4 kilograms and measure about 48 to 53 centimetres in length. Every kick, stretch, and hiccup is a reassuring sign that your little one is getting ready to meet you soon.

What you may experience
The third trimester is a time of preparation and change. Common experiences include:
- Shortness of Breath: As your baby grows, they may press against your diaphragm, making breathing feel more difficult.
- Swelling: Your hands, feet, and ankles may swell due to fluid retention.
- Backaches: The extra weight of your baby can cause strain on your back.
- Braxton Hicks Contractions: These “practice contractions” help your body prepare for labor.
- Frequent Urination: Your baby’s position may put pressure on your bladder.
Preparing for your ultrasound
Many expectant parents choose to schedule a 3D/4D or 5D HD live ultrasound during the third trimester to see their baby’s features in high detail. It’s a beautiful way to bond with your baby before birth—seeing them yawn, smile, or suck their thumb can be an emotional and unforgettable experience.
At Baby Tyme Ultrasound Studio, we specialize in capturing these incredible moments using state-of-the-art imaging technology. Our caring team ensures your experience is as comfortable, safe, and memorable as possible. Whether it’s your first ultrasound or a final keepsake before birth, we’re honored to be a part of your journey.
Tips for a healthy third trimester
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to reduce swelling and maintain energy levels.
- Practice Prenatal Exercises: Gentle stretching or prenatal yoga can alleviate discomfort and prepare your body for labor.
- Pack Your Hospital Bag: Include essentials like baby clothes, toiletries, and important documents.
- Attend Prenatal Appointments: These visits ensure your baby’s growth and your health are on track.
