The First Trimester of Pregnancy

Exciting changes ahead – what to expect

The first trimester of pregnancy is an exciting journey filled with many milestones, and it marks the start of a remarkable transformation for both you and your baby. At Baby Tyme Ultrasound Studio, we’re here to guide you through this early stage with insights and support.

Weeks 1-13

The first trimester of pregnancy’s marks the beginning of your pregnancy journey. It starts on the first day of your last menstrual period and continues through to the end of week 13. Although this time may feel early in your pregnancy, it’s actually one of the most crucial stages for your baby’s development. During these first 13 weeks, your baby transforms from a single fertilized cell into a tiny, fully formed fetus. This trimester is filled with rapid changes, for both your growing baby and your body.

What’s happening with your baby

The first trimester of pregnancy is a time of extraordinary development. Here’s a breakdown of what happens week by week:

  • Weeks 1-4: Although you may not even know you’re pregnant yet, a lot is already happening inside your body. After fertilization, the egg implants itself securely into the lining of your uterus. Around this time, the placenta also begins forming, which will soon take on the vital role of nourishing your baby throughout pregnancy. Right now, your baby is about the size of a poppy seed—tiny, but full of potential.

  • Weeks 5-8: This is when major changes begin to occur. The brain, heart, and other major organs begin to develop. By week 6, the heart starts beating and can often be seen on an ultrasound. Tiny limb buds emerge, which will eventually grow into arms and legs. Facial features, such as the eyes and nose, also start taking shape. Your baby is growing rapidly, and though still small, is becoming more recognizable each day.

  • Weeks 9-13: By this point, your baby has grown significantly. The arms, legs, fingers, and toes are fully formed and can even begin to move—though you might not feel it just yet. The external ears, eyelids, and reproductive organs start developing as well. By the end of week 13, your baby is about 3 inches long and weighs around an ounce. It’s amazing to think how much growth has occurred in just a few short weeks!

What you may experience

Every pregnancy is unique, but some common first-trimester symptoms include:

  • Morning Sickness: Nausea and vomiting, often triggered by certain smells or foods, are common.
  • Fatigue: Your body is working overtime to support your baby, which can leave you feeling unusually tired.
  • Breast Tenderness: Hormonal changes may make your breasts sore or swollen.
  • Frequent Urination: The growing uterus and increased blood flow can lead to more trips to the bathroom.

How to support a healthy pregnancy

  • Eat Nutritiously: Focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
  • Take Prenatal Vitamins: Folic acid and other nutrients are essential for your baby’s development.
  • Stay Hydrated: Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water per day.
  • Rest: Listen to your body and rest when needed.
  • Avoid Harmful Substances: Refrain from smoking, alcohol, and excessive caffeine.

When to schedule your first ultrasound

Many expecting parents schedule their first ultrasound around 6-8 weeks to confirm the pregnancy, check the baby’s heartbeat, and determine the estimated due date. At Baby Tyme Ultrasound Studio, we offer a comfortable and welcoming environment for this special milestone.
